Head shape Consultation

Babies’ heads are pretty amazing. In the early months, their skull bones are malleable and their sutures (should be) wide open. Because of that flexibility, a baby’s head can easily adapt to the forces placed on it, whether that’s time spent resting in one position, tight neck muscles, or even the way they were positioned in the womb.

Head shape changes are actually very common. Studies estimate that 15–20% of infants develop some degree of positional flattening, while some research has found signs of head shape changes in up to 40–46% of babies during the first few months of life.

In other words: this is incredibly common, and it is no one’s fault.

The good news is that because babies’ heads are still so moldable early on, the earlier we address head shape changes, the easier it often is to improve them with positioning, movement, and play. Early detection and treatment can often help families avoid the need for a helmet altogether.

During a Head Shape Consultation, Dr Lizzy will examine your baby’s head and take a scan using SoftSpot. Together we’ll discuss:

✔ How infant head shape develops and what influences it
✔ What flattening patterns mean and when they matter
✔ Simple positioning and movement strategies you can start right away
✔ When additional support or physical therapy may be helpful

Whether you’re just noticing a small flat spot or already have a cranial scan, this visit is designed to help you understand what’s going on and feel confident about your next steps.

*If a full physical therapy evaluation is recommended after the consultation, a credit will be applied toward your evaluation appointment. *
